Volunteer Opportunities

Whether you volunteer a few hours a month…

          or one hour a year…

                 all are welcome!

The McFarland Historical Society has a huge and active volunteer pool. This means that–unlike with many clubs–no one individual is stuck doing most of the work. Many hands make light and FUN work!

Our volunteers range in age from 8 to 88, and include teens from McFarland High School, as well as those doing Eagle Scout projects. Whether you volunteer once a year or a few hours a month, you can make a valuable contribution to our community.

To volunteer on a garden/grounds project at the Larson House, please contact Gail Aaroen at gtaaroen@hotmail.com:

  • Take a turn mowing the Larson House Museum (LHM) lawn or shoveling the sidewalks.
  • Help in the LHM garden.
  • Dig and repot extra garden plants once a year to sell at our annual plant sale.

To volunteer in any other capacity (examples below), please contact Jane Licht at (608) 234-2504 or licht.jane@gmail.com. Jane will then have the relevant volunteer coordinator contact you:

  • Participate in a cleaning or holiday decorating crew at the LHM.
  • Provide musical or other entertainment at an outdoor event.
  • Play piano at the LHM, including holiday songs for A Very Victorian Christmas in December.
  • Set up exhibits at either museum.
  • Set up and taking down tents and tables for outdoor events at either museum.
  • Cook and/or serve food & desserts at our tea parties and other events.
  • Bake holiday cookies to offer to visitors during December LHM tours.
  • Demonstrate a skill at the History Museum during Early Days of Wisconsin.
  • Do minor repairs or painting projects.
  • Guide tours at either museum. (We have a binder with notes on each room to help.)
